A tradition of the PARADISE VALLEY JAZZ PARTY is to honor a musician who has made an outstanding contribution
to jazz. During the first 31 years of the Paradise Valley Jazz Party honorees have included giants of the jazz world:
Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Al Grey, Joe Williams, and other musicians who have made an extraordinary contribution to
the art form and to the people who love to listen to good jazz.
The musician who will be honored at the 32nd annual PARADISE VALLEY JAZZ PARTY in May of 2009 will be the
marvelous jazz pianist, vocalist, and composer of so many jazz classics including (the writer’s favorite)
“My Attorney Bernie” . . . Dave Frishberg!
The following from Dave’s web site:
Early in his career, during the 1960s, he was a busy pianist in New York City, playing regularly with the major jazz artists of the time, including
Ben Webster, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Carmen McRae, and Gene Krupa. In 1971 he moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a studio musician
and stayed active in jazz circles. He has recorded with a diverse array of artists, including Manhattan Transfer, Jimmy Rushing, Bud Freeman,
Bill Berry's L.A. Band, Susannah McCorkle, Kenny Davern, and Rebecca Kilgore..
Frishberg has become best known for writing and recording his own songs and performing them in prominent jazz and cabaret venues. His song
credits include cult classics My Attorney Bernie, Van Lingle Mungo, Peel Me A Grape and You Are There. Four Frishberg albums have earned
Grammy nominations for Best Jazz Vocal. Other artists who have recorded his songs include Susannah McCorkle, Rosemary Clooney, Michael
Feinstein, Diana Krall, Blossom Dearie, Carol Sloane, John Pizzarelli, Bob Dorough, Tony Bennett, Jamie Cullum, and Mel Torme. His songs,
including the well-known I'm Just A Bill, appeared regularly on ABC's Schoolhouse Rock series.
Frishberg's current recordings are on the Arbors Jazz label. Latest Arbors CD is Retromania: Dave Frishberg at The Jazz Bakery. His earlier
recordings are available on the Concord, Blue Note, and Fantasy labels. He makes his home in Portland, Oregon.
Seating in the Music Room is reserved cabaret style seating. Because of the intimate nature of the event, guests of the party can meet and talk to
the musicians in the Musician’s Green Room. The event is called a “party” because, during the weekend the line between the performers and the
audience gets blurred as people on both sides of the stage (the ones who make the music and the ones who listen to the music) all become part of
the party.
If you buy a badge for the weekend or a session ticket and later find that you cannot attend all the sessions, your badge or ticket can be used by
someone else. In case it is necessary to cancel your reserved badge or individual session ticket, full refunds will be made up to 30 days prior to
the event (April 2nd, 2009). To buy your badge or session ticket or for additional information contact:
or, you can e mail our office: the (Contact Us) page
or, you can buy your tickets on-line through: www.instantseats.com/events/ParadiseValleyJazz
